Facing fine sand and turquoise waters near Tulum, here you are on a large and beautiful resort with a classic and refined style. Stretching over 30 acres, this all-inclusive luxurious club brilliantly combines various activities for all types of clientèle with complete tranquillity. The high quality facilities are best exemplified in the children's club for example. The concept is simple: dreams come true at the Great Keppel Island Resort! Other interesting details that make a difference include: bookings are not necessary for the restaurants, no cards are needed for the towels, and there are no compulsory bracelets! What a relief!

    Location 7.25 /10

The hotel is 75 mi away from Cancun international airport (1h15min by car) and 35 mi from Playa del Carmen (a half hour journey). The hotel stands on the seafront, approximately 3 mi to the north of the archaeological site of Tulum, which is also visible from the beach. On a bike, the ride takes some 20 minutes. The distance from the hotel to the town of Tulum is a little over a mile. In the other direction, Xel-Ha park is a 5 minute drive from the hotel, which is also ideally located for getting to the archaeological site of Coba, as the only road to it goes through Tulum and there is no closer hotel.

    Accommodation 8.30 /10

The hotel consists of 431 large rooms divided into 6 different categories; 4 of them have been adapted for guests with reduced mobility. With a minimum area of 42m², they are all equipped with the same amenities: a suitcase stand, a rack, an umbrella, a magnifying mirror, an alarm clock, a television with 36 channels (plus music channels), a DVD player, a free safe, individual air-conditioning combined with a fan, a minibar with tea and coffee-making facilities, a telephone with a direct line, and an iron and ironing board. The decoration of the rooms varies depending on the name (of the Mexican state or town) of the building they are in. This way, guests may find their room adorned with beautifully designed wooden furniture from Jalisco, or with handicraft from Puebla, or even with black pottery from Oaxaca used in a lamp stand for example... In each case, the bedding, on which you will find the hotel's programme for the day, will be very comfortable. As for the bathrooms, they are large and homogeneous, decorated with marble, a full length mirror, either a shower or a bathtub, and sometimes a bidet. Amenities also include: a hair-dryer, hospitality products by the brand Dreams Tulum, bathrobes, slippers, and a lot of storage space.

    Overview 8.20 /10

The mangrove has been mastered here. You reach the entrance to this beautiful luxurious resort by a large driveway bordered by rows of trees. Renovated in 2006, the hotel complex was built in 2001. Very pleasant with its comfortable settees, the entrance hall is cloaked in hints of cream. Just after this, a very elegant bar with a high ceiling allows you to admire the extent of the complex through its glass façade. A straight and clear path leads to the rectangular swimming pool and the sea in the background. Close-by, a second swimming pool is dedicated to activities. Particular to the region, a temazcal in large white stone and an open air cenote are nearby. As a consequence, an underground river runs through the site. In the evening, a geyser rises from the middle of the cenote. A total of 25 mostly white 2 storey buildings hold the resort's guest rooms and the most recent ones have lifts. Easily recognisable, the Mexican part has been completely painted yellow. Facilities abound, ready for guests to discover: a large gym with picture windows (we regret its worn floor and the fact that you have to walk quite a distance through the resort to be able to get to it); a superb marble spa; a daily cinema on the beach for families; a night club... and the inevitable mini-club open from 9.00am to 10.00pm! Parents do not have access to this; it is a kingdom entirely for children, who each leave their handprint on one of the walls that are already covered with various coloured marks. Behind the high wooden fence, children can easily be entertained all day long: a climbing wall at least 6m high, painting, video games, a computer room with Internet access, television, DVDs, a multiple jet fountain to play with, a slide in the sand, a basketball court, a small theatre, snacks, table tennis, quoit, table soccer, etc. Children are even invited to camp on the beach once a week! However, adults have their own little treat, a cigar cabinet.

    Food and drink 8.20 /10

Food abounds at the Dream Tulum and the service is really top-notch: in addition to the main buffet, there are 6 à la carte restaurants available on-site. Tasty dishes in an adapted and refined setting is what you'll find wherever you decide to dine, and you don't need to book in advance! Breakfast is impressive, with its 21 hot dishes, as well as pastries and fresh fruit... 4 options are possible for lunch: a buffet, a restaurant on the seafront, room service, and the 'El Patio' snack bar. In the evening, there is a maximum of choice: Italian, Asian, Mexican, International, French, and seafood. For the buffet alone, 4 themes are simultaneously on offer: Mexican, Italian, French, and American, without forgetting the children's corner. Guests even enjoy dinner to the sound of jazz music. Before and after meals there are 6 bars waiting to serve guests of the hotel.

    Beach 8.40 /10

The superb beach of fine sand stretches out over almost 300m and is supervised by lifeguards. This is a beach where many weddings are organized. The palm trees in the sand and the palapas parasols next to the plastic deckchairs provide a good amount of shade, and massage booths and beach services are both available. Children will love the trampoline set up in the water! Just after the hotel, another - unspoilt - beach (which is very rare on the Mayan Riviera!) stretches as far as the archaeological site of Tulum. Allow 40 minutes on foot to get there! However, you will not be able to access it via the beach, as the entrance is on the road. Given the configuration of the area, you will quickly see that it is very easy to find perfectly quiet spots to relax by the clear turquoise water, only slightly marred by a small amount of seaweed. Sandals are recommended for swimming because of the corals and rocks found in the water, and motorised water sports are prohibited because of the coral reef not far away. This spot is therefore ideal for snorkelling. At the water sports club, activities such as sailing, kayaking, and trimarans are offered to guests for free, together with daily diving lessons given by the diving centre (PADI) in the rectangular swimming pool.

    To know

Consisting of 25 animators, the English and Spanish-speaking entertainment team organizes light activities. As for nighttime entertainment, only professionals are invited to perform on stage. Incidentally, a theatre is in the process of being built. The hotel also organises interactive shows, such as casino theme nights. A third of the clientele is European while the rest come from the United States and Canada. Both families and couples are very happy here, especially when the season is good. Guests tend to be regular customers.

Our advice: Request a car to get to the hotel rather than using the complimentary bus provided by the travel agency, as it drops off at every hotel of the same chain all the way from Cancun to Tulum. Something to be taken into consideration after a 10 hour flight!

The highly contemporary lines of the Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya are a bit disconcerting at first, but they blend in magnificently with the surroundings. The resort is impressive and is liked by guests for its modernity, originality, the quality of the facilities and its excellent layout that means there are no long distances to cover. Whether you are staying as a family or as a couple, you are sure to enjoy your stay here, provided you have a liking for grandeur and modernity.

The Azulik hotel is a cluster of huts on the seafront that afford a charming view of the coast and the beach. This environmentally-friendly resort principally caters to couples looking for somewhere they can be in complete harmony with nature. The Azulik villas, built entirely using noble wood, have large private terraces from which guests can admire the spectacular view of the sea in the east. On the other side, their floor to ceiling bay windows look out to the rainforest in the west. We recommend this establishment to all those looking for a romantic spot where relaxation will be your only pastime.

A basic little hotel right by the beach and the sea, offering some of the most heavenly picture-postcard surroundings you'll find. This place is best suited to less demanding guests as it offers very little in the way of facilities.

The Papaya Playa Project is the perfect hotel for those who enjoy the 'Gypset' (Gypsy + jet set) lifestyle. Young artists from all over the world gather here to be at one with nature, relax, and celebrate important events. While the hotel promotes ecotourism, it doesn't neglect the luxury side either. The menu and the selection of artists invited to design the entertainment programme are exclusive.
