Hotel Grand Sirenis Rviera Maya Hotel 5 star
Carretera Federal Cancun Tulum Zona Costera Km. 256.3 Akumal Quintana Roo 77710 Tulum, Mexico
Amy Adejokun Section editor

The highly contemporary lines of the Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya are a bit disconcerting at first, but they blend in magnificently with the surroundings. The resort is impressive and is liked by guests for its modernity, originality, the quality of the facilities and its excellent layout that means there are no long distances to cover. Whether you are staying as a family or as a couple, you are sure to enjoy your stay here, provided you have a liking for grandeur and modernity.

    Location 3.0 /10

The village of Akumal is only 2 mi from the Grand Sirenis. Tulum is 18 mi away and Playa del Carmen is 21 mi away. It takes about 1 hour 10 minutes to get to Cancun international airport, which is 54 mi away.

    Accommodation 8.70 /10

At the Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya, you are taken to your room in a golf buggy. A porter is present in each of the buildings, in case you have any requests. All of the rooms at the resort are junior suites, and they measure about 60m². Everything seems to have been designed on a grand scale in these beautiful and homely private spaces, which are refreshingly modern. The colour scheme is a combination of orange and cream. The rooms are comfortable too, thanks to the sofas, nice bedding, and king size or twin beds that are just as firm as they should be. They have views over the mangrove, and are provided with a television with 33 channels, individual air-conditioning with a fan, a direct international telephone line, a mini-bar with tea and coffee-making facilities, a free safe, a radio alarm clock, an iron and an ironing board. The wall separating the bed from the bathroom has a big, upside-down trapezium-shaped window in it, and a big jacuzzi bathtub is hidden just behind this. The bathroom is also provided with a hair-dryer, a white square wash basin topped with a vanity unit, a multi-jet shower, bathrobes and a good selection of Sirenis hospitality products. The toilet is in a separate room.

    Overview 8.70 /10

The Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya was built in 2006 and was designed in the shape of a Mayan building, but with a minimalist, modern style. The guest rooms are located in numerous very long, white designer buildings. These are two-storey trapeze-shaped constructions, just like the breathtakingly high-ceilinged lobby. A paved path leads from building to building on the both the ground floor and the first floor. The air circulates freely in these buildings, just as it does in the lobby. All the white buildings that make up the complex contrast with the mangrove, which has been left in its natural state. To get an idea of the scale of the Grand Sirenis, the Riviera Maya has 504 guest rooms, and the Maya Beach has 456, meaning the complex has an overall capacity of 2,300 guests. There is a large, round swimming pool with a jacuzzi and a pool bar in the middle. Further down is the second pool, which is wide and very long, and reserved for activities, and the third pool is the children's pool, which includes part of the large club under palapas. The fountain at its centre spouts a refreshing sprinkle of water. Carry on walking for a short distance and you reach the river. It meanders for 400 metres between the two hotels on its way to the main swimming pool. Guests also have the use of a very large gym.

    Food and drink 8.45 /10

There are two buffet restaurants offering identical dishes to guests at the Riviera Maya and Maya Beach. On top of this, there are also 7 à la carte restaurants offering a wide range of dishes in various spots around the resort. At each of these, a maximum of 30 guests can dine at a time (the buffet restaurants, on the other hand, can seat 400). Among others, guests can choose between the Italian restaurant with its arched walkway, the gourmet French restaurant not included in the package deals, the Japanese restaurant with 6 show cooking spaces and a contrasting red and black colour scheme, the rectangular Brazilian restaurant with its white and green colour scheme, exposed bricks and barrel vault. Lunch is a lighter affair taken at the buffet restaurant or the snack bar near the huge swimming pool. At dinner time, all the restaurant areas are open from 7:00pm to 10:00pm.

    Beach 7.70 /10

At this rather wild spot on the coast, the beach is actually located at a narrow point of the Atlantic Ocean and is consequently protected, meaning it is therefore not eaten away by the turquoise waters of the ocean. However, even though the bay is very large, the beach quickly fills up with people. Opposite the complex, the 600 metres of white sand - with the inevitable smattering of seaweed - are split by a rock upon which a Mayan temple presides. You'll really kick yourself if you don't have your camera when you see it! Lots of rocks can be seen in the sea, and so sandals are strongly recommended. There is an area that has been divided off for swimming, but it is not very big in comparison with the capacity of the complex. Plastic deckchairs, palapa parasols, showers and on-the-spot service are all available for guests here. The water sports club is located beneath a large palapa roof at one end of the beach. Snorkelling and kayaking are possible free of charge, unlike the motorised activities.

    To know

The Grand Sirenis Riviera Beach and the Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya are both located on the same site, and have shared facilities which can be accessed by guests staying at either of the two establishments. Be careful not to try to check in at the wrong reception though: if in doubt, just head for the Mayan pyramid! The hotel attracts a diverse clientele, including groups, families and couples, and you are also likely to run into Canadians, Americans and Europeans (in summer). Between 23 and 30 people make up the entertainment team. A biologist looks after the turtle eggs laid next to the beach in the summer, between the start of June and the end of August. The evening shows run according to a 14-day rotation, and there is a concert hall furnished with tables for you to make the most of this entertainment. Watch out for the cenote next to the lobby bar! There were plans to construct a spa in 2008.

Facing fine sand and turquoise waters near Tulum, here you are on a large and beautiful resort with a classic and refined style. Stretching over 30 acres, this all-inclusive luxurious club brilliantly combines various activities for all types of clientèle with complete tranquillity. The high quality facilities are best exemplified in the children's club for example. The concept is simple: dreams come true at the Great Keppel Island Resort! Other interesting details that make a difference include: bookings are not necessary for the restaurants, no cards are needed for the towels, and there are no compulsory bracelets! What a relief!

The Azulik hotel is a cluster of huts on the seafront that afford a charming view of the coast and the beach. This environmentally-friendly resort principally caters to couples looking for somewhere they can be in complete harmony with nature. The Azulik villas, built entirely using noble wood, have large private terraces from which guests can admire the spectacular view of the sea in the east. On the other side, their floor to ceiling bay windows look out to the rainforest in the west. We recommend this establishment to all those looking for a romantic spot where relaxation will be your only pastime.

A basic little hotel right by the beach and the sea, offering some of the most heavenly picture-postcard surroundings you'll find. This place is best suited to less demanding guests as it offers very little in the way of facilities.

The Papaya Playa Project is the perfect hotel for those who enjoy the 'Gypset' (Gypsy + jet set) lifestyle. Young artists from all over the world gather here to be at one with nature, relax, and celebrate important events. While the hotel promotes ecotourism, it doesn't neglect the luxury side either. The menu and the selection of artists invited to design the entertainment programme are exclusive.
