Located in the heights of Bali in the area of Ubud, The Viceroy benefits from a superb location on the hillside of a valley. The view from the communal rooms and the villas is absolutely superb, just like the facilities. You will have to get use to the closeness of the accommodations and the severe lack of greenery though. A special mention goes to the food.
A beautiful location for this hotel just a few miles from the city of Ubud, nestled on the hillside of the Pitanu Gorge facing lush virgin vegetation. The surroundings are calm, with the hotel being slightly setback from a pleasant little village, itself surrounded by rice paddies, where you will find a few local restaurants. It takes about 1h 30m to get here by car from the international airport of Denpasar.
25 villas in 4 different categories: Terrass, Deluxe, Garden and Face. The villas are particularly large and covered with traditional Balinese roofs, the plaited fibres of which give the rooms an enticing allure. There is no separation between the bedroom and the sitting room, and the sliding glass doors open out onto the terrace with a private swimming pool and a lovely furnished gazebo. The decor in the rooms is very classic European (with Roman columns, for example) and the contrast with the local elements will delight those who love their dose of kitsch. As for the amenities, you'll find everything you need: individual air-conditioning, a large flat-screen television, free Wi-Fi, an iPod docking station, a DVD player, and a bathtub in the bathroom. The view over the valley is very relaxing.
Opened in 2005, the entrance to this hotel is elegant and sets the tone for the entire establishment, with a helipad allowing wealthy guests to be able to land directly in front of the hotel. The cosy lobby revolves around the reception desks, and there is a staircase that opens onto the terrace with an overflow pool with a beautiful natural panorama that can also be enjoyed from the bar and the restaurant. With just a few deckchairs and parasols here, the owners of the hotel clearly mean for this area to be a sort of extra space, most likely hoping that guests will prefer to enjoy their own private pool in their villa. It is easy to move around in this hotel and the various staircases make it possible to navigate between the communal rooms. Guests with reduced mobility can use the cart service for getting around. The bar is entirely open and very lovely. For those who like to pamper themselves, there is a well-being centre where you can enjoy massages, manicures, reflexology treatments, etc. It has a pleasant layout on two levels. Simple and sober. A small gym.
A beautiful restaurant, the 'Cascades' is ideally located on the side of the valley and offers an obstructed view. Very charming, the tables are nicely spread out, there is marble flooring and the staff is very attentive. The menu is well thought out and during our visit in 2012, a French chef was even at the helm, proposing new and temporary cuisine based on local products. Accompanied by a superb wine menu with nearly 160 names from around the world (New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, Argentina, Italy... and some fabulous vintages: Mouton Rotschild, Haut-Brion, Cheval Blanc, etc.), the restaurant is one of the hotel's best assets. The highlight of the meals are the dance shows organised on some of the weeknights on a small stage facing the diners. The dancers are chosen with care and the numbers synchronised with the courses; it is a real treat.
There is a wide range of activities, all at an extra cost, to choose from here: dance, yoga and cooking lessons, helicopter rides, etc.
