Next to the Melia Las Americas and Sol Club Palmeras hotels, the Melia Varadero is 7 miles from Varadero town centre (15 minutes) and about 24 miles from the international airport (40 minutes) by car. This hotel is on the seafront, facing Florida Detroit on the north coast of the Hicacos penisula. Outside of the hotel, the surrounding areas are rather spoilt.
Nicely decorated in an antique style, the 483 rooms and 7 suites of the Melia Varadero all have a balcony or terrace, air conditioning, satellite television, safe (with a fee), telephone for international calls, fridge, bath, hair dryer, 220 volt sockets. They all have view over the sea, the bay to the south, gardens or pool. The green colours of the furniture and the decoration are relaxing, as well as the hotel being very quiet. The bathrooms are long and offer toiletry products in a small bag to the guests.
Anyone who enters this hotel will be astonished by the interior garden. In a well of rotunda light where there are 9 panoramic lifts, the green plants creep up to the sky, accompanied by the birdsong of exotic birds. Quite dark, the hall renovation at end of year 2007 will improve this. In this hotel, inaugurated end of 1991, mainly accomodating business men, there isn't much entertainment organised.
Food and drink
Decorated in two impressive sculpted twin lions, the entrance of the main restaurant reminds us of the Prado museum in Madrid. You have to be well dressed. Various international buffets are served. Four à la carte restaurants. Otherwise, a café snack bar is open 24 hours a day and there are 5 bars on the site. For lunch, guests have a choice between the buffet, the restaurant on the beach, a grille and the cafeteria. In the evening as well as the buffet there is Steak house (good steaks), Trinidad, Fuerteventura and a Chinese restaurant.
No beach in front of the hotel but the sea with rocks. You therefore have to walk to reach the fine golden sand (think of bringing a sun hat!) But once on the sand, you can enjoy the wide beach, larger than the other beaches on the peninsula. Shaded with parasols in dried palm tree leaves, deckchairs and towels are available. The water is perfectly transparent.
The hotel has an "all inclusive" option. Guests come from all over the world. Every year the hotel renovates a different section of its facilities. In 2007, the restaurant was redecorated and in 2008, the snack bar and hall were renovated.
The Bahia Principe is a pleasant hotel where families and couples can make the most of the sea and the many activities available. It is well located on the peninsula, not too near nor too far from Varadero centre and the other hotels.
