A small simple hotel but also typical, a place you had better reserved for a weekend between November and March, because most of the rooms overlook other buildings' walls and the common areas do not have windows.

    Location 9.0 /10

Located on a small street opening towards campo Santo Filipo e Giacomo (Castello district), 656 feet away from Saint Mark's square.
Vaporetto station: San Zaccaria (east of the Doge's palace).
The airport is 8 miles away. Take a boat (Aliguna) from San Zaccaria. Allow around 30 minutes.

    Accommodation 6.45 /10

The 26 rooms of the Castello are decorated in a Venetian style, with walls hung with silk brocade: one of the luxurious things you will find in Venice, as the fabric protects the walls against humidity. Other typical elements: the Murano glass wall lamps, the mirros set in golden frames. Despite these details, you should not forget that the matresses are too limp for those with a sensitive back, that the view is non-existent for most of the rooms, and that the bathrooms, covered with white tiles, offer just enough space to fit a bathtub (or a shower). Hair-dryer and small guest soap. For those that usually use a safe, they will leave their valuable items at the reception. The rooms are equipped with a TV, air-conditioning, telephone and a mini-bar.

    Overview 6.20 /10

The Castello's common areas were renovated in 2005, and rooms in 2006. Decorated in Venitian style, the entrance is composed of banging doors and a welcoming area with a sofa and the reception counter. The stairway located in the rear allows you to get to the rooms. On the side of the reception, the armchairs and seats are those from the bar also used as a TV room and breakfast room in the morning.

    Food and drink 5.70 /10

The only meal served at the hotel is breakfast. Continental and served buffet-style (bread, cereals, Italian croissants, youghurts, canned fruit juice). The breakfast room is also used as bar during the day. It does not open onto the outside, which may displease some, especially when the weather is nice. Nevermind: if you love terraces, you just have to go about 656 feet away to one of the cafes of Saint Mark's square. Beware of prices though: depending on the terrace, an espresso costs between ?4 (£3) and ?6 (£5)...

    To know

Since there is no elevator, those that do not really like to go up and down the stairs should ask for a room on the first floor.
However, the higher the level is, the more interesting the view is. From some of the rooms on the last floor, you can see a few tiled roofs. Nicer than the close (and without windows) façades that the other units overlook.
    Lodging advice
The hotel offers triple rooms for families: they have an area of 269 square feet, which is high-standard in Venice for medium class hotels (even some suites are not larger sometimes). The double rooms offer a surface of about 172 square feet, which is very good for a week-end.

A gorgeous hotel, a palace... With two entrances, Venice style. Great arrival in private boat (or taxi-boat) on the lagoon, or more modest, through one of the bridges spanning the della Madonna dell Orto canal. You can get here in a great train: quality ambiance and services. The only bad part: Saint Mark's plaza is quite far away.

''Poor parent'' of the Bauer group, the Bauer hotel does not give you the feeling of a high standard hotel. However, since it shares the living-room and the restaurant with its neighbour Palazzo, and since it gives the opportunity to go by private ship to the Palladio spa, you can choose to stay at the Bauer (cheaper) without giving up the princely rest of your visit.

A hotel with very good services and, like most of its neighbours, with a sundeck overlooking the Great Canal. But the prices are more affordable here, because the establishment is a 4-star local norms hotel. For the accommodations, because the restaurant still has the prices practiced in the Venetian palaces. The quality also, even if the recipes are as old as the city of Doges.

The Boscolo Venezia is a quiet luxury hotel set in a very pleasant district of North Venice. Far from the other palaces of the city, slightly tucked away, this hotel has one of the most superb gardens in Venice. For those who can afford it, it is one of our favourite top-end hotels. It may be a bit far from the city centre, but we strongly recommend it if you have a few days to make the most of the city.

This luxury addess offers a privileged location in Giudecca Island, in an amazing historical ambiance (old religious boarding school). Tranquility and untouchable view of the Doge's palace, on the other side of Saint-Mark's basin. Be careful, however, the austere architecture will not please everybody.

The Saturnia International is both a traditional and designer hotel with a perfect location in Venice. The pure Venetian style and the 1930s furniture work together harmoniously each on their own. An authentic atmosphere and a very good restaurant don't do any harm either. As you'll have understood, we really liked this place!
