The Hotel Giorgione, popular with French tourists, is a quiet hotel where the main asset is a beautiful inner courtyard with a swimming pool - a rare thing for Venice. The comfortable rooms and the kind welcome make the Giorgione a hotel to take note of in Venice, especially for families.

    Location 7.33 /10

Located in the sestiere Cannaregio, the Giorgione is peaceful without being too far from the centre. The Strada Nova shopping street is nearby, and the Ca' d'Oro water bus (vaporetto) stop on the Grand Canal is just over 300m away. To get to and from the airport, you just need to get on or off at Fondamenta Novo, 600m north of the hotel. It's the first stop on the orange and blue lines of the Alilaguna water shuttle after Murano. The Ponte di Rialto (Rialto Bridge) is a 5 to 10-minute walk from the hotel, and Piazza San Marco (Saint Mark's Square) is about 20 minutes away.

    Accommodation 7.35 /10

The hotel's 70 guest rooms are spread over 3 floors with a lift. The rooms either overlook the inner courtyard, which means they are very quiet, or the surrounding side streets, some of which can be quiet noisy. As in the communal areas, the decoration in the guest rooms is far from sober: flowery fabrics, painted antique furniture, embroidery, Murano chandeliers, etc. However, it is refined in its own way, and comfort is certainly not lacking. After all, this is a 15th century building in Venice. The standard, 'Classic' rooms are a reasonable size and suitably equipped. Almost all of the bathrooms are fitted with a bathtub (if not, there is a shower). The only difference between the standard and superior, 'Elegance' rooms is their size.

The Giorgione also has 'Prestige' suites that can sleep up to 4 people, some of which are a duplex with a mezzanine - a great choice for families! The two 'Giorgione' suites were designed with romance and comfort for two in mind: a four-poster bed, a sofa...

    Overview 7.85 /10

The huge Murano chandelier that decorates the lobby is a wee bit frightening! Like many of the hotels in Venice, the Giorgione is a victim of the classic, over the top, tacky and opulent style: wall hangings, varied paintings, statuettes, stuccoes, display cases full of figurines, painted vases and plates, etc. Fans of minimalism will have sore eyes. However, the lounges on the ground floor are large and comfortable, the welcome is charming, and it doesn't take long to feel at home in this hotel. The entire ground floor is devoted to communal areas: the lobby, billiards room (free), bar, and breakfast room. Run by the Pasotto family for two generations, the Giorgione has a delightful vast courtyard that serves as a terrace with a brand new swimming pool, opened in 2013. A rare asset for Venice outside of the palaces, it is rather superfluous for those on a weekend break to the city but great for families or long stays in the height of summer.

    Food and drink

The Giorgione's breakfast room is huge; there's no chance of being knocked into during the first meal of the day, especially thanks to the courtyard terrace where guests can eat on sunny days. The outside is lovely, but the interior is a bit hard on the eyes with the wall paintings framed by heavy curtains. Breakfast consists of a generous continental buffet.

A gorgeous hotel, a palace... With two entrances, Venice style. Great arrival in private boat (or taxi-boat) on the lagoon, or more modest, through one of the bridges spanning the della Madonna dell Orto canal. You can get here in a great train: quality ambiance and services. The only bad part: Saint Mark's plaza is quite far away.

''Poor parent'' of the Bauer group, the Bauer hotel does not give you the feeling of a high standard hotel. However, since it shares the living-room and the restaurant with its neighbour Palazzo, and since it gives the opportunity to go by private ship to the Palladio spa, you can choose to stay at the Bauer (cheaper) without giving up the princely rest of your visit.

The Boscolo Venezia is a quiet luxury hotel set in a very pleasant district of North Venice. Far from the other palaces of the city, slightly tucked away, this hotel has one of the most superb gardens in Venice. For those who can afford it, it is one of our favourite top-end hotels. It may be a bit far from the city centre, but we strongly recommend it if you have a few days to make the most of the city.

This luxury addess offers a privileged location in Giudecca Island, in an amazing historical ambiance (old religious boarding school). Tranquility and untouchable view of the Doge's palace, on the other side of Saint-Mark's basin. Be careful, however, the austere architecture will not please everybody.

The pure Venetian style and the 1930s furniture work together harmoniously each on their own. An authentic atmosphere and a very good restaurant don't do any harm either. As you'll have understood, we really liked this place!
