Hotel Monaco et Grand Canal Hotel 4 star

A hotel with very good services and, like most of its neighbours, with a sundeck overlooking the Great Canal. But the prices are more affordable here, because the establishment is a 4-star local norms hotel. For the accommodations, because the restaurant still has the prices practiced in the Venetian palaces. The quality also, even if the recipes are as old as the city of Doges.

    Location 8.78 /10

Located on Calle Vallaresso, right beside the vaporetto stop with the same name (San Marco neighbourhood). Saint-Mark's plaza is 165 feet away from the hotel.
The airport is 8 miles away. Take the boat (Aliguna) from Saint-Mark's plaza. Ride duration: about 35 minutes.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

The hotel offers a total of 99 rooms. 60% of them are fitted out in traditional Venetian style and 40% in contemporary style. The first class rooms have a surface of about 172 feet², the others are more spacious. On the 4th (and the last) floor, all the accommodations have a mansard setting, with sloping ceiling and sometimes beams of the frame are exposed. Room 414 has an ''altana'' (private sundeck on the roof) that overlooks the Great Canal on one side and from the other the Venetian roof tiles. The facilities include a flat screen TV offering 25 channels, individual air-conditioning, direct telephone line and a minibar. The bathrooms are elegantly fitted out: with a bathtub separated by two translucent dividing walls with a satin curtain in the middle, single or double vanity unit (in the superior rooms and the suites), hair-dryer and quality welcome products (2 ounces), labeled with the name of the hotel.

    Overview 8.45 /10

The hotel is composed of two old palaces: the Dandolo palace (that housed the first Venice Casino for about 140 years) and the Erizzo palace on the Great Canal. The two palaces are one today: you go from one to another from the reception or through corridors located on the first floor. The contemporary decoration of the reception is a success even if it uses mixed elements (Antique Mosaic, sun lounge of metal, monochromatic paintings on the walls). From the lobby, you can't see the sundeck overlooking the Great Canal, but there is one, of a single piece, where on one side you have a drink and on the other side dinner. Remember if you don't stay at the Monaco: the bar is open for all clients and a drink costs about 6 &euros; (5 pounds).

    Food and drink 7.95 /10

Breakfast is served at the table. No buffet and many delicacies are unfortunately offered for a fee. For instance boiled eggs (6 &euros;, 5 pounds), a fresh fruit plate (7&euros;, 5.5 pounds), a bowl of cereal (3.5 &euros;, 3 pounds)... What is included in the breakfast? A squeezed fruit juice (orange or grapefruits) and a basket of bread rolls and viennoiseries, a coffee served as you like it (expresso, lungo, capuccino). The restaurant, divided into several alcoves (2 have a view of the Great Canal, the 3rd one overlooks the antique style Mosaic, also noticeable from the lobby), with the charm of the old hotels where conversations are sotto voce, and where the service is traditional. Delightful and very pleasant place in a destination like Venice. At noon and in the evening, the service is a la carte. Beautiful tables (covered by silverware, glasses with engraved monograms), traditional cuisine but of a very good quality. Choose a dish that you don't like (like risotto with beef tongue): despite everything, you will still enjoy the sauce and the unction... Be aware, however that a dish costs about 30 &euros;, 25 pounds.

    To know

The Monaco and Grand Canal is a well located hotel (at the mouth of the Great Canal, by Saint-Mark's plaza), with very good services. Its architecture combines both the old and the modern style. Think about taking a look at the lounge areas on the first floor (when they are not being used for a gala meal): this is the place where Venice Casino opened in 1638. The reception hall gives place to a string of rooms. Baroque decoration, with painted plaster columns imitating marble, indoor wooden fountain that looks like marble, old fresco... Casanova was a regular customer in this old place.
    Lodging advice
You want to see the Great Canal from  your room? Ask for one of the 7 suites. They are located on this side of the building. Plus, they can host up to three people.
The price of the suites is not within your budget limits? There are also 19 rooms that overlook the Great Canal. They are more expensive than the others (with a view of an indoor yard or the other buildings that are very close) but what a view of San Giorgio Island and the Giudecca bridge!

    advantage

    • Large sundeck on the Great Canal for a drink or to have dinner.
    • Beautiful rooms and bathrooms.

    disadvantages

    • Breakfast does not offer a buffet.
    • Few rooms overlook the Great Canal.

This small hotel is very well located, a few steps away from Saint-Mark's square. It is also located on the verge of a canal. As for its charm, it is very busy during the day- but at night, it becomes peaceful again. Ideal place for a first visit in Venice.

Great arrival in private boat (or taxi-boat) on the lagoon, or more modest, through one of the bridges spanning the della Madonna dell Orto canal. You can get here in a great train: quality ambiance and services. The only bad part: Saint Mark's plaza is quite far away.

''Poor parent'' of the Bauer group, the Bauer hotel does not give you the feeling of a high standard hotel. However, since it shares the living-room and the restaurant with its neighbour Palazzo, and since it gives the opportunity to go by private ship to the Palladio spa, you can choose to stay at the Bauer (cheaper) without giving up the princely rest of your visit.

The Boscolo Venezia is a quiet luxury hotel set in a very pleasant district of North Venice. Far from the other palaces of the city, slightly tucked away, this hotel has one of the most superb gardens in Venice. For those who can afford it, it is one of our favourite top-end hotels. It may be a bit far from the city centre, but we strongly recommend it if you have a few days to make the most of the city.

This luxury addess offers a privileged location in Giudecca Island, in an amazing historical ambiance (old religious boarding school). Tranquility and untouchable view of the Doge's palace, on the other side of Saint-Mark's basin. Be careful, however, the austere architecture will not please everybody.

The Saturnia International is both a traditional and designer hotel with a perfect location in Venice. The pure Venetian style and the 1930s furniture work together harmoniously each on their own. An authentic atmosphere and a very good restaurant don't do any harm either. As you'll have understood, we really liked this place!
