mong the Bauer group of hotels, choose the Palazzo. Stay here (almost all the rooms offer some kind of view of the Great Canal), eat here ("panoramic" breakfast in a sundeck room on the 7th floor), pamper yourself here (luxury shop and private boat if you want to go to the Palladio spa).

    Location 3.0 /10

Located on Calle dei Tredici Martiri, small street opening on the Great Canal, 500 feet away from Saint-Mark's plaza (San Marco district).
    Vaporetto stop: Valerosso.
The airport is 8 miles away. Take the boat (Aliguna) from Saint-Mark's plaza. About 35 minutes trip.

    Accommodation 8.70 /10

91 spacious rooms and suites (of at least 215 feet², very often 270 feet², and even more). Families of 3 can easily stay in almost all the units. As for the decor, the materials are luxurious, specially the upholstery fabrics from the Venetian factory, Rubelli. Floral stylised motifs woven in the fabric (brocade or damask), silk thread... but it is too much when the fabric of the same colour is used in the entire room (hanging on the walls, curtains, bedspreads). The suites are more colourful (and they also offer a bathtub with hydro-massage jets). Otherwise, the rest of the facilities are very refined. Flat screen TV (hidden in the furniture), direct telephone line, air-conditioning, a mini-bar. The bathrooms with Carrara marble floors, with bathtub, hair-dryer, bathrobes, slippers and welcome products that you will definitely buy from the hotel shop. The brand? Santa Maria degli Angeli, the name of an old Venetian convent that used to prepare potions and salves in the 15th century. The sizes (1.5 ounces) of the products in the bathrooms offer you just enough to try their quality.

    Overview 8.70 /10

The hotel was built in the end of the 19th century. The palace, where the Palazzo is located (hence its name), dates from the 18th century. You enter the hotel thanks to a small side street: in Venetian style, because you should know that up until the 20th century, people used to get to Venice by boat; the streets, narrow and somber, were not useful at all. Today, the Great Canal is crowded with people, the secondary canals are being used for gondola promenades... So the streets are being used again. And the service entrances (that open toward the streets) become entrance doors. The one of the Palazzo gives you access to an elegant traditional reception area decorated in 19th century Venetian style (Chinese panels). From here, you can reach the Bauer hotel without going out again, but the clients of the Palazzo have the right to separate restaurants. Available to everybody: the jacuzzi ''on the roof'' (extra cost), the fitness room, sauna and steam bath.

    Food and drink 8.90 /10

Pay special attention: breakfast is served to the clients of the Palazzo in the dining-room on the last floor where a terrace offers a view of Saint-Mark's Basin and the edge of Dorsoduro. You feel privileged with such a view! The meals are served buffet-style. The hot dishes (omelette, hard-boiled eggs, bacon) are brought to the table, same as the hot drinks. At noon and in the evening, a change of place: you can choose to eat on the sundeck, at water level this time, on the verge of the Great Canal. Or in a dining-room lit by severral windows, with tables covered with white tableclothes. The food is very delicious, but expensive. Order only one dish (around 35 &euros;, 30 pounds) enjoy the ambiance and the service and this way you'll save your bank account from being overdrawn.

    To know

In the same place (but with different entrances), there are two hotels and apartments: the Bauer, the Palazzo and the Casa Nova. Three of the four units composing the Bauer group in Venice. On Giudecca Island you will find the newest hotel: the Palladio.
Out of the three hotels from the Bauer group, the Palazzo is the most ''Venetian'' (traditional palace, 19th century furniture and decoration) and better located: it opens directly on the Great Canal. If you pass by the hotel in vaporetto, you will easily notice its facade. Gothic style and floral gothic - there is a gallery-balcony on the 2nd floor: here you will find the room of honour, used when the palace was a private unit, and where the suites are located.
    Lodging advice
Almost all the rooms can accommodate up to 3 persons: a good point for those planning to arrive here with their families.
If you don't see the Great Canal from your window, that means that you are not really lucky. In fact, the 91 units, or almost all of them, of the Palazzo are directed toward the Great Canal. However, the Great Canal view is not always from the front.

A hotel with very good services and, like most of its neighbours, with a sundeck overlooking the Great Canal. But the prices are more affordable here, because the establishment is a 4-star local norms hotel. For the accommodations, because the restaurant still has the prices practiced in the Venetian palaces. The quality also, even if the recipes are as old as the city of Doges.

This small hotel is very well located, a few steps away from Saint-Mark's square. It is also located on the verge of a canal. As for its charm, it is very busy during the day- but at night, it becomes peaceful again. Ideal place for a first visit in Venice.

Great arrival in private boat (or taxi-boat) on the lagoon, or more modest, through one of the bridges spanning the della Madonna dell Orto canal. You can get here in a great train: quality ambiance and services. The only bad part: Saint Mark's plaza is quite far away.

The Boscolo Venezia is a quiet luxury hotel set in a very pleasant district of North Venice. Far from the other palaces of the city, slightly tucked away, this hotel has one of the most superb gardens in Venice. For those who can afford it, it is one of our favourite top-end hotels. It may be a bit far from the city centre, but we strongly recommend it if you have a few days to make the most of the city.

This luxury addess offers a privileged location in Giudecca Island, in an amazing historical ambiance (old religious boarding school). Tranquility and untouchable view of the Doge's palace, on the other side of Saint-Mark's basin. Be careful, however, the austere architecture will not please everybody.
