This is an address for those with an "average budget" (as this is no youth hostel), very well situated for discovering the historical centre of Vilnius on foot, adapted for families or groups of friends, and meticulously well kept; but with simple comforts and ancient corridors resonating at the slightest noise. Recommended for a night or two, and to those who have nothing against old convents.

    Location 8.48 /10

On 12 Ausros Vartu, the main street of the Old Vilnius and just by the Aurore gate.
The airport is 4 mi away. Allow for a journey of 15 to 20 minutes.

    Accommodation 6.95 /10

On the top floor, the rooms are in the attic: they are less spacious than the others on the intermediary floors. The surface area has been calculated anyway: around 10m² for the double rooms, 129 sq ft to 161 sq ft for the triple rooms, and 194 sq ft to 215 sq ft for the quadruple rooms. Regarding the view, the orientations are: the garden surrounding the buildings, the main interior courtyard, or another courtyard converted into a car park. Exterior calm is guaranteed, there not often being many people in the courtyards; as regards peacefulness indoors (the corridors and rooms near to your own), that depends a lot on the other travellers. Furthermore, the furnishing is very simple, even monastic. A bed head, cupboard, and desk in white wood, on which a television set has been perched. When there is a bathroom, it is equipped with a shower (apart from the luxury category, which has a bath). Two small soaps are the only hospitality products (abstemious people will appreciate that).

    Overview 6.70 /10

The Domus Maria opened as a hotel in 2003. It has 39 rooms distributed over four floors (with lift). The facilities are very simple. The reception is in a recess by the entrance door, and a few armchairs and sofas are set out in the corridor leading to the rooms. Decorated in a very pure white, evoking a very well-maintained university, though a noisy one at that, even when there are only a few people passing through. The floor is tiled, and the walls are of stone... The materials do not smother the noise, so be careful as you pass down the corridors, even in the daytime, out of consideration for others. Also note the television and library space on the top floor, where there is an exercise bike: although available for guests, it is rather strange to take exercise in a corridor recess, particularly if other travellers are reading or watching the television on the sofas.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

Breakfast is served in one of the old halls of the convent, which has been made less austere by a wooden veneer halfway up the walls. There are windows for providing light, but not a terrace, given the building. There is a full buffet to start the day off well: eggs, sausage, fruit juice, cheese, fresh fruit, bread and pastries. It's self-service for the tea or coffee. Apart from breakfast, you need to book in advance to be served a meal, which is not very convenient for independent travellers. If this is unsuitable, there are some very good restaurants (which are not too expensive) just by the Domus Maria. There is a drinks distributor in the hall. On fine days, you can sit in the courtyard of the old monastery at one of the benches and tables available there. As it is outside, this also allows smokers to light up.

    To know

The Domus Maria formerly housed a Carmelite convent. Therefore, expect rather narrow windows, thick walls, resounding corridors and sober fittings. However, staying at the Domus Maria is like taking a step back in time (the oldest parts date from the 15th Century, and one of the halls has frescoes from the 18th Century).
    Accommodation advice
From single to quadruple, all sizes of rooms are available. There are even eight rooms with a bathroom on the landing, for small budgets. The "luxury" category has a bath in the bathroom, but is no more comfortable because of it.

Very well located, on the main road through the historic district of Vilnius; a historical building, most of the rooms overlook the old town, one of which is a new, round-shaped suite; a restaurant that absolutely must be tried, particularly in the summer, when the tables are put outside. The Europa Royale is a good choice of accommodation, even if the soundproofing is not up to the standards of a contemporary building.

A central location, a historical building, a fine setting in the Old Town of Vilnius... The Radisson SAS, along with several other hotels in the Lithuanian capital, offers all of the above. So why stay here instead of somewhere else? To swim - but of course - in the swimming pool (or lounge in the whirlpool bath) for no extra charge. To enjoy a generous breakfast after sleeping (preferably) in one of the superior rooms or suites, as the standard rooms and their bathrooms are not very spacious.

This is one of the most appealing hotels in the historical centre of Vilnius. It has few bedrooms but offers high-quality facilities and service, a pleasant layout (with a covered winter garden) at any time of the year, relaxation facilities and a very good à la carte restaurant... You are advised to visit the Stikliai before everyone else does - you won't go wrong and it won't cost the earth: part of the Relais et Châteaux chain of hotels, it has a local feel and is full of charm.

A beautiful hotel to keep in mind for its bedrooms and location - in the heart of historic Vilnius. All of the old city is accessible on foot from the hotel. It is cosy, with decoration typical of the area, especially on ground level and underground, but make sure that you do choose a room according to your taste. Note that you will be charged extra to go to the gym: take it or leave it, depending on your budget and your holidaying habits.

Located in Vilnius Old Town, surrounded by old buildings... The English-style interior decor is not very local, but it is typical: enthusiasts take note!
