    Location 7.0 /10

Ideally located on Dhammazadi Road, at the heart of Yangon opposite the sublime Shwedagon pagoda, the main tourist site in the former capital of Burma. Transfers to Yangon International Airport, 9 miles away, take around 45 minutes with traffic or 20 minutes at night when there is no one on the roads.

    Accommodation 8.70 /10

The wooden key chain for the guest rooms in the shape of a pagoda serves as a reminder that the Shwedagon pagoda is close by: it is even visible from some guest rooms. The guests rooms are full of charm, much like the rest of the hotel. The deluxe rooms, the smallest category, are 60m² large, while the suites afford 80m² of comfort. The parquet, the door, the furniture, the desk, the coffee table, the luggage rack... everything is teak, even the elephant that decorates the lounge! Only the armchair is wicker, while the white walls add a touch of freshness. You'll sleep like a log in the king size bed, or one of the two queen size beds. Amenities include a fruit basket, four bottles of water provided free of charge, a large flat-screen television, a minibar fridge, tea and coffee-making facilities, an electronic safe large enough to store a laptop, individual air-conditioning in addition to a ceiling fan, and free Wi-Fi Internet access. Room service is available 24 hours a day. Unfortunately, there is no balcony. A mosquito net and anti-mosquito incense spray are available on request. The bathrooms, tiled and decorated with a painting, include a large shower closed off by a glass door with a tropical shower head and flexible hose, a toilet, toiletries, tissues, a soap dish in the shape of a shell, cotton buds in a lacquer box, bathrobe and slippers, and a hair-dryer stored in a drawer. The six suites have the luxury of a separate lounge area, separate toilets and a bathtub.

    Overview 8.70 /10

Built in 1996 and renovated in 2010, the Savoy has 30 guest rooms including six suites in a three-storey colonial-style building, which was the home of an American doctor in the 1900s. It is refurbished ever year after the monsoon. Guests will immediately fall for the charm of the lobby and its wealth of details and decorative objects: statuettes, paintings, a traditional Burmese xylophone, a gong, and a local chess set. The At Dhammazedi and its 'Wine Bistro', a French wine bar that also serves Burmese wines, is a great place to unwind. One of the Savoy's best features is its rectangular swimming pool with a black floor, 15 metres long by 7 metres wide and 1m60 deep, open from 7:00am to 7:00pm. Breakfast in the morning or a drink in the evening are enjoyed to the sound of the piano. During the day, teak deckchairs topped with cushions in the shade of the blue fabric parasols are available for guests to recline in. The setting is peaceful and towels are provided on site free of charge.

    Food and drink 8.20 /10

The restaurant's name alone - the Kipling's restaurant - conjures up images of escape. With the teak flooring, ceiling beams, tables and chairs it is certainly a change of scenery! The cherry on the cake is the view of the Shwedagon pagoda from the window. Meals are served on a Burmese lacquer plate, while the toothpicks are stored in a small lacquer box. Catmint completes the decor. The dishes are less exotic but nonetheless delicious: pasta al dente with black mushrooms, and a tasty cheesecake for dessert. It should be said that the chef is French. In fact the cuisine is a French-Asian fusion, although there is also a Burmese menu. Dishes from the à la carte menu are served in the little dining room that can seat 30. Breakfast is served from 6:00am to 11:00am, lunch from 11:30am to 2:30pm, and dinner from 6:30pm to 11:00pm. It is served in the form of a buffet either at the poolside or on the first-floor terrace, overlooking the same swimming pool or the Shwedagon pagoda. There is no shortage of choice: sausages, orange (not great), watermelon or pineapple juice, tea, coffee, croissants (not great either, but then again, we are in Burma!), cheese, fruit salad (excellent), papaya, strawberry or pineapple jam, etc. The fruit basket is also host of delights: watermelon, pomelo (a sort of big grapefruit), bananas, apples, pineapple, papaya, etc. Guests can also try local specialities, such as the pasta salad, the noodles, or the traditional fish soup bubbling in a marmite in the corner. All that's missing is the à la carte options, like omelettes, crepes and pancakes! In the evening, guests can enjoy an aperitif in the Captain's Bar with its fantastic colonial atmosphere until 1:00am. There is also a large flat-screen television.

    To know

Free Wi-Fi Internet access is available throughout the establishment, and guests can also surf the web for free using the computer in the lobby. Two meeting rooms can accommodate 24 and 12 people respectively, giving a total capacity of 36 people. One of the rooms has a smoking terrace that overlooks the Shwedagon pagoda. The hotel has a free car park for its guests. The clientèle is mainly American, followed by German, British and French guests. The hotel is under the same ownership as the Bay View in Nagpali.
