Even if Agra does not form part of Rajasthan, this city is an excellent stopover for a tour around Rajasthan. Located some 125 miles south of Delhi, this mythical place owes its fame to the Taj Mahal, a famous palace built by Emperor Shah Jahan as evidence of his great love for his wife. You must see the majestic Red Fort and Sikandra, the mausoleum of Emperor Akbar. One or two days are quite enough to visit this city and its famous monuments.
Visit the Taj Mahal and if your budget doesn't allow the entrance fee - INR 750, admire it from the terraces of the Shanti Lodge.
Sites to see include the magnificent Taj Mahal, a love testimony of Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife, and the Red Fort, built by Emperor Akbar when he was 23 years old.
Remember to cover your head when you visit the Taj Mahal as you will appreciate discovering every details of it. And under this strong sun, it is better to wear a hat on your head.
Do not buy small bags of water that you have to pierce. Such water may make you feel sick...
Food is the same as in the entire Rajasthan - excellent.
The specialities of this place are small objects in marble encrusted with precious stones. It is better to buy them in the city shops where quality is guaranteed. Indeed, small merchants crowd along the road leading to the Taj Mahal, offering you items at low prices but of dubious quality.
