Chennai (Madras), a large modern capital, preserves the hallmarks of British colonisation with its numerous official buildings close to Saint George fort. Wander around Georgetown, the former "white city" and discover the Old popular neighbourhood, the Saint Mary Armenian catheral, the Saint Mary church, Hindu temples and smell the fragrances of the flower market at Parrys Corner. Take a stroll along Marina Beach, to appreciate the Madrassis and take a view of the Chepauk Moghul palace. In the heart of the city, dive into the cultural and religious cradle of the town. Around Anna Salai, main business street of Madras, discover the Grand Mosque built at the end of the 18th century on Triplicane Road. Do not miss out on the mosque of a Thousand Lights at an angle with Peter's Road and further below, Saint George cathedral close to the Gemini movie studios. In the south, cross the Adayar river to get to the Theosophic Society park and gardens, and visit small sanctuaries, a museum, a rich library and, to the east, Elliot's Beach. Slightly further, visit the Kalashetra classical ballet and music school, surrounded by coconut groves and ponds.
