Discover Onam Festival India

Onam is a Hindu festival celebrated across Kerala in the Malayalam month of Chingam (August-September). It is also the state's harvest festival, celebrating the homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali, who's spirit is said to return tothe state during Onam. The festival lasts for 10 days, marked by four public holidays. The most important of these are the first, Atham, and the last, Thiruonam. During the festival, Kerala's already vibrant landscape comes alive with colour, with everything from folk dancing to elephants and the famous snake boat competitions at Alleppey. The impressive Onasadya feast is also served during the festival, a nine course meal laid out on banana leaves, with an array of curries, rice and vegetable dishes.
