Located to the east of Bali, Candidasa is a haven of peace away from the hustle and bustle of Kuta beach and the crowds in Ubud. Unlike these two major tourist destinations on the 'Island of the Gods', Candidasa lacks character and charm. Unless you are visiting the area to enjoy the facilities offered by the seafront hotels or the few sandy beaches, there is no real reason to consider making a trip here. Nevertheless, if you are a fan of scuba diving, there are several diving centres on this side of the coast, offering excursions such as wreck diving and trips to the neighbouring island of Nusa Penida and Lombok. Ngurah Rai International Airport is around an hour and a half to two hours away.

Candi Dasa: what to do?

You can also go on 'shopping trips' to Kuta and the peninsula's outdoor shopping centres. Take a ride on a scooter through the clear waters... There are also several diving centres from which you can explore the Balinese seabeds.

Many excursions are available, including trips to the Tanah Lot Temple (at sunset), Bedugul Temple and the northeast of the island (one-day excursion), the centre of the island, Mount Batur and Ubud (one-day excursion), and the east of the island and the Mother Temple of Besakih (one-day excursion). For adrenaline seekers, it is easy to book rafting trips on the Ayung River.

Reminders

You can also exchange your money at BRI and Danamon banks. Note that you cannot withdraw money from the ATMs as they only accept local bank cards. Therefore make sure you have some cash with you.

To avoid

The shopping centre in Nusa Dua has many bureau de change outlets, but it is advisable to avoid changing your money here, as the fees are cheaper in the large hotels.

Candi Dasa: what to eat?

The outstanding Balinese cuisine at two great restaurants in Benoa: Bumbu Bali, which serves 100% traditional Balinese cuisine made with local products, and Kecak Bali.

Candi Dasa: what to buy?

The dozen or so shops in Nusa Dua offer a wide choice of local crafts to take home as souvenirs. A word of advice: exotic fruits are always nice to have after you return from your holiday...
