Mashhad, Iran's largest holy city, lies in the Khorasan province. Second industrial centre in the country, it attracts over 14 million pilgrims per year. The sacred grounds surround the mausoleum of Imam Reza, mosques, religious schools, libraries, museums, etc... But non-Muslim tourists only have limited access to the buildings, safe for the Qods-e Razavi museum. Apart from the town centre at the grand bazaar, you can watch turquoise stone carvers at work.
