Bolzano

By Amy Adejokun Amy Adejokun Section editor

Our Editorial team's advice

A population of approximately 100,000 inhabitants has hidden itself in this valley in the mountains. Located a little over 260m above sea level, Bolzano is a little basin surrounded by the Dolomites. For a thousand years it served as a point of passage between the north and the south as well as the main place for annual markets, due to the fact that it was a stop off point for merchants from all over Europe. Today, German is spoken in this city just as much as Italian, and the road signs are bilingual. This city is impressive for its cleanliness and tranquillity. Its Gothic-style churches and numerous castles stand in harmony with the more frivolous beauty of the city. On one of the most typical streets in Bolzano, Via dei Portici, where you will find all types of shops, the urge to make some purchases will drive you crazy!
