Calabria is, without a doubt, the archetypal homeland of the chili pepper. The little pods are grown all over the region and used to prepare many local specialities. If you like fiery flavours, you should go to Spilinga, a tiny village in the province of Vibo Valentia. This is where 'nduja' is made, a kind of spreadable sausage made with pork meat and spiced up with lots of hot Calabrian pepper. You can spread it on bread, serve it with spaghetti, and even put it on pizza, but go easy - it really is very hot!
