Much smaller than the other national parks in Basilcata, Gallipolli Cognato Park is 270km≤ in size and sits just north of Pollino. It has a varying landscape, one that ranges from sandstone peaks, to the dense green of the Cognato forest. Visited in spring, the park is awash with beautiful flowers, whereas in autumn, the mixture of golds, browns and oranges is equally as impressive. The mountains are easily accessible by car or bus, and are home to one of Italy's ?prettiest villages' Castelmezzano - which sits atop of one of the peaks. For the best view, climb the stairs of the ruined Norman castle and you will be rewarded by a panorama of the entire Basento Valley. Gallipolli Cognato is a hit with rock climbers, mountain bikers and horse riders alike.
