Il Tarvisiano is the mountainous area surrounding the commune of Tarvisio, which has just a few thousand inhabitants. Located in the far north-eastern corner of Italy, at the border with Austria and Slovenia, this area is a real paradise for sports-enthusiasts. The topology of the place and its particularly dry climate mean that it's a great for a whole host of activities. During the summer months, for example, the choice ranges from rafting, paragliding and horse-riding to mountaineering, golf and mountain-biking. In the winter, however, you can go skiing, snowboarding and ice-skating at the Palazzo dello Sport in Pontebba, or even try your hand at 'mushing' (dog-sledge racing). Il Tarvisiano is also home to a 57,000-acre forest, as well as the two lowest peaks in the Alps, Montasio and Canin. The Fusine Lakes, which reflect the forest and the snow-covered peaks overlooking them, are the perfect example of the area's natural beauty.
