Salento Italy
By Amy Adejokun Amy Adejokun Section editor

Discover Salento

A place rich in history, over the years Salento has been home to a diverse range of people. The Messapii, followed by the Greeks, then the Romans and finally the Byzantines all dominated this region and left traces of their culture here. The Salento peninsula is the most southern part of Apulia. In the west, its low, sandy coastline borders the Ionian Sea. Santa Maria di Leuca is on the Adriatic side, where the coast is winding and uneven. The rocks, which open up to form caves, turn into little creeks that are accessible from the sea. From Santa Cesarea you can reach 'Zinzulusa', a cave, easy to explore providing the tide is low.
