Basilicata's 'Materana' coast shares the waters of the Gulf of Taranto in the Ionian Sea with Apulia and Calabria. Characterised by a sandy coastline and water can get quite dirty in high season, the most frequently visited towns here are Metaponto and Policoro. Having been part of Magna Graecia (Latin ?Great Greece') in the 8th century BC, these areas have preserved the precious relics of ancient monuments. To explore them, you simply have to head a bit further inland.
