11th to 14th century: Kosovo is part of the Serbian Empire.
14th to 20th century: Kosovo is part of the Ottoman Empire: large-scale migration of Turks to Kosovo.
1918 to 1941: Kosovo is part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
1941 to 1945: Kosovo is attached to the Republic of Albania, under Italian occupation.
1945 to 1989: Kosovo becomes an autonomous province, attached to the Republic of Serbia within the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
1989 to 1999: Kosovo's autonomy is reduced by the Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic.
1999: NATO intervention to end the ethnic cleansing.
1999 to 2008: Kosovo comes under United Nations protection.
17th February 2008: declaration of independence.
3rd April 2010: 65 countries recognise Kosovo as a sovereign state, against 63 who don't.
Public holidays in Kosovo are divided into religious and civil festivals. 1st January: New Year's Day. 25th December: Christmas (Catholic). 7th January: Orthodox Christmas. 17th February: Independence Day in Kosovo. 1st May: International Labour Day. Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha and Easter are also celebrated, although the dates vary.
