Historical dates

Around 2,000 BC: Populations settle in the Latvian territory. They live on farming and amber trade.
In 120:, Riga is founded. It quickly becomes a member of the Hanseatic League.
From 1552 to 1582: Ivan the Terrible wages war on Livonia (territory grouping Latvia and Estonia). The outcome is a division of the country between Poland, Sweden, Denmark and Russia.
From 1921 to 1939: Latvia becomes independent. It is then attached to the Soviet Union.
In 1990: Following the singing revolution, Latvia recovers its independence.
In September 2003: Latvia, through a referendum, decides to integrate into the European Union.
On May 1st 2004: Latvia joins the 25 European member states.
