Antsiranana is more commonly known as Diego Suarez. It is the largest city in northern Madagascar.
615 miles from Antananarivo, it is located in the north of Madagascar which is known for its Sugarloaf mountain, making its bay the second most beautiful in the world after that of Rio. Officially called Antsiranana, Diego Suarez means 'the port' in Malagasy. A former colonial town, it has retained its traditional architecture and is perched on a promontory overlooking a natural harbour. Places to visit include the Montagne des Français and Diego Bay.
Visit Amber Mountain National Park, where you can go on lovely walks in the forest in a cool and invigorating climate, as well as Cape Diego, Courrier Bay, Ankarana Special Reserve with its spectacular tsingy, and the countless number of caves and beautiful rivers.
You cannot go to Diego Suarez without visiting the magnificent Sugarloaf mountain, the Montagne des Français, and the village of Ramena with its gorgeous beach. Diego Suarez is also a former colonial town where you will appreciate the traditional architecture.
Do not forget mosquito repellent and spray some on as soon before you start your day. Then put some more on in the evening, even if you are wearing long sleeves, as mosquitoes bite through clothing.
Avoid wearing shorts and t-shirts in the evening if you are walking around the islands. Wear long sleeved shirts. The cyclone period (late December to early April) is to be avoided.
Here you can enjoy romazava and ravitoto. Romazava is prepared with brèdes (green leaves), while ravitoto is a kind of stew made from ground cassava leaves and fatty pieces of pork. You can also enjoy fish, shellfish, spices and rum.
As souvenirs, we recommend you take home some valihas (stringed instruments) if you are a music lover, masks (some are just beautiful), bracelets, and fine spoons made from zebu horns.
