On the island of Flacq, the east coast is home to hotels that are mostly of very good quality. They can be found along the beautiful beaches. Keep in mind, however, that the east coast receives twice as much rain as the west coast.

That being said, it is the ideal place for sunbathing, and the hotels offer all kinds ofwater sports activities. However, you should not miss out on visiting theÎle aux Cerfs to enjoy the mini-cruise and explore the lagoon with a mask and a snorkel. The disadvantage of staying in a nature-based destination is that for shopping and outings in the city, you must go to Port Louis (27 miles away).

If you prefer to make these trips without having to depend on a group, you can hire a car or a taxi for a day. Car hire prices are relatively high and in Mauritius you drive on the left. Hiring a taxi for the day is not as expensive as you would imagine. It will only cost around £50, and you can always negotiate with the driver. Another advantage of hiring a taxi is that your driver will also be a guide and will happily show you the off the beaten track side of Mauritius.

Belle Mare: what to do?

A golf course. Even if you have not perfected your swing, the beautiful courses are a must, especially the Belle Mare, which has 3 18-hole golf courses set between stretches of water, volcanic rocks, hills and forests, There is also Le Touessrok Golf Course on the Île aux Cerfs, which offers beautiful views of the lagoon. Green fees cost £85 unless you are staying at the hotel. In this case, only golf carts cost extra (£13).

Île aux Cerfs. Take a mini-cruise from one of the hotels or go directly to Trou d'Eau Douce, from where the crossing is the quickest. On the island, you will find a bar, a snack bar, water sports and a superb sandy beach that slopes gently down into a turquoise lagoon. To discover an area of the island devoid of tourists, head away from the landing stage and the vendors selling pareos.

  • The beautiful beaches
  • The various leisure activities (golf and the water park in addition to the usual land and water sports)
  • There are no real cities nearby
  • The frequent rain in July and August.

Reminders

Plan a day trip to the outskirts of Port-Louis: the Maison Créole d'Eureka (Creole house of Eureka), where you can have lunch or stay the night, the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, and the Domaine des Pailles, a reconstruction of an 18th century sugar mill.

To avoid

Do not go hiking inland without a hat or sunscreen. The small roads and trails through the cane fields are ideal for walking and cycling, but even when the sun is behind the clouds, it will burn you quickly if you have not taken any precautions.

Belle Mare: what to eat?

A salad of ourites (octopus) in a marinade, chicken curry, exotic fruits (mangoes and lychees from November to February, papayas from June to September, and Victoria pineapples and bananas all year round). A millionaire's salad (made with palm heart). You can try it at Alain Ducasse's restaurant, Spoon des Îles (part of the Saint-Géran hotel). Another good, much more affordable place to eat Mauritian cuisine is Chez Tino in Trou d'Eau Douce.

Belle Mare: what to buy?

Jam made of exotic fruit, brown sugar, spices, basketry and natural essences (ylang-ylang, vanilla, lemon grass, eucalyptus), which you can buy in the morning from Port Louis Market, or from the shops in the Chateau de Labourdonnais and the Aventure du Sucre museum if you prefer to avoid the hustle and bustle of the capital (and the busy traffic).
