Discover La citadelle de Port Louis

The Citadel of Mauritius, dating from the 16th century, stands on a hill overlooking the capital, Port Louis. It is also known as Fort Adelaide, in honour of the wife of King William IV. Built out of blocks of basalt, its structure was modified several times before taking on its current rectangular shape. Originally, it served as the officers' quarters. Its cannons made it possible to defend the island during many battles. Today, it is home to the India Company Museum and the National Maritime Museum. Visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the Mauritian capital from the top of its ramparts.
