North from Mount Khangai, the mountainous lands of Khövsgöl are covered by forests, then wooded steppes which eventually give over to a desert area, in the south. There you see immense yak and horse herds, lead by a population of 80,000 nomadic breeders. It definitely is one of the most magnificent regions of Mongolia. No less than 300 lakes have been listed in this region and most certainly as many rivers. When you arrive at Lake Khövsgöl, you feel like you are on the seaside, so impressive are its dimensions: 85 miles long and 22 miles wide. This great freshwater reservoir is covered by an ice layer, for several months of the year. In the same region, the cave of Dayan Derkhii displays a series of stalactites.
