30 miles only from Ulan Bator, the Gorkhi-Terelj national park boasts a scenery of particularly beautiful steppes, full of odd rocky formations. Beyond the Khentii mountains, north of Ulan Bator, the great eastern Mongol plain unfolds, with its flat steppe landscapes. The volcanic region of Darigan is sometimes called "waiting room of the Gobi". You come across many craters, as well as a surprising cave full of stalagmites, in Taliin Agui. South of the Sükhebaatar province, the sandy plains of Molstog stretch almost over 50 miles, to give over, eventually, to the great arid steppe of Dornod, which itself stretches over some sixty miles.
