Discover Rabat's medina Morocco

The Medina district, Rabat's old town, was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012. This tranquil Medina is a sharp contrast to the lively souks of the tourist cities. Hassan II Avenue separates the newer part of the city from the Medina, and serves as a link between two completely different worlds. With its white walls and blue shutters, the atmosphere in the Medina is decidedly Mediterranean. To get there, head for the Bab El Alou and Bab El Had gates in the east of the city, and then follow the Almohad Walls built in the 12th century on the order of the sultan Ya'qub al-Mansur. The Almohad Walls stretch for 5,263m on the west and south sides of the city of Rabat. Both the Walls and their gates are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. To the west, the Medina is surrounded by the walls of the Kasbah of the Udayas. It is thanks to its numerous surrounding walls that this Medina built by the Moriscos, an Andalusian people chased out of Spain by Philip III in the 17th century, is one of the few structures of its kind to have remained so well-preserved. Bathed in a traditional and authentic atmosphere, the Medina has many interesting places to visit, including traditional souks, the Kasbah of the Udayas, the former Jewish district known as the Mellah, and the Makki mosque.

Traditionally inhabited by the city's working class, the Medina is a centre of trade and handicraft, home to many shops selling traditional Moroccan arts and crafts. It is a very symbolic historical site in Rabat.
