Discover Western Sahara Morocco

To reach the edges of the Sahara, head to Errachidia, the departure point for the valley of Wadi Ziz. 12 miles in the direction of Erfoud, stop off at the Meski Blue Source that springs up in a cave and flows into a pool where you can cool off. Erfoud is an old French garrison town just outside Tafilalet, home to Morocco's largest palm grove with 130 Ksour and a million date palms. For a millennium it was the legendary city of Sijilmassa, the ancient inevitable passage point for caravans. If you wake up at 3:00am you can watch the dawn rise over the dunes of Merzouga in Erg Chebbi, the largest in Morocco. Climb to the summit of at least the third hill, or even the highest. Some are as high as 150m. Here, the waves of windblown golden sand stretching over 32 miles will leave you breathless. In the background you can see the Algerian rocks and Wadi Ziz lost in the sands of Taouz.
