New Zealand's emblematic bird is the kiwi. You will find it hard to see one in the wild, because there are very few left. Go to Auckland's zoo instead, where you can be sure to see some. To watch these birds in their natural habitat, go to the outskirts of the wetlands of Manukau Harbour, South-West of Auckland. They shelter several wading bird species, among which the curlew, as well as some finches and redpolls. As for the islands in the gulf of Hauraki, in the bay of Auckland, they shelter a large number of blue penguins, petrels and shearwaters.
