The video has become viral. An emaciated polar bear, somehow dragging its feeble paw through a trash can, desperate to find something to eat. In just a few days, this bear has become a striking symbol of the consequences of global warming.

Paul Nicklen, photographer for National Geographic, was the man who filmed the heartbreaking scene on Baffin Island in Canada. He was accompanied by members of the conservation group Sea Legacy. All witnesses to this distressing spectacle were unfortunately totally helpless to intervene.

Many are asking could why the team did not feed the starving polar bear. Nicklen explained "I don't walk around with a tranquilizer gun or 180 kg of seal meat". Also, in Canada it is prohibited to feed polar bears.

Global warming causes the ice caps to melt and as such they don't reform. As a result, the polar bears can no longer move across the land to find the seal population which normally makes up their diet.
