Last Thursday, October 5th, represented one of the most anticipated nights of the year for drinking aficionados and the global drinks industry as a whole. Now in its 9th year, the awards for the 'World's 50 Best Bars' kicked off at London's Southwark Cathedral for a live ceremony and vibrant night celebrating all things alcoholic. The new list, unveiled at the annual event, was comprised of bars spanning an impressive 24 cities and 19 countries.

How do the prestigious awards work? The voting process consists of votes cast by a society of just over 500 members from 55 countries. Society members range from drink experts to bartenders and cocktail aficionados to drinks writers. Each voter is obliged to cast 7 votes of which at least 3 must be bars located outside of their country of residence. In addition the bars they vote for must be judged on personal experience; one requirement being that they must have visited said bar at least once in the past 18 months.

So who did well this year? One continent in particular which will have walked away from the awards with their head held high is Asia, who accounts for an impressive 12 places on the World's 50 Best Bars list, doubling its representation since last year. Asia also has the most new entries in this year's competition. A remarkable 6 bars in Singapore have made the list. This includes Singapore's Manhattan at the Regent Hotel, coming in at No.7, which has been praised for its iconic global cocktails. Other contributors to Asia's success include 2 bars in Hong Kong, 2 bars in Japan, 1 bar in China and 1 bar in Taiwan.

Asia appears to be doing considerably well all-round within the global drinks industry, coming in third as the most popular continent for cocktails behind Europe and North America. In addition, out of the many awards bestowed within the 50 Best Bars competition, Asia won the award titled 'Highest New Entry'. This was presented to renowned gin bar 'Atlas' at Parkview Square, Singapore, which houses over 1,000 distinct varieties of gin. In recognition of Asia as an up-and-coming, popular drinking destination, Asia's 50 Best Bars was launched in 2016, further acknowledging the continent's distinguished and diverse drinking scene of cocktail bars, whisky specialists and speakeasies.
