The aim of the centre is to be able to watch marine life in the most natural way possible. It will be situated at the end of Busselton Jetty, 2km out at sea. Inside the centre, you will be able to observe the marine life in its natural habitat, without them being in enclosures. The centre will come with a dining area. The construction of the observatory will start in 2021, and it is expected to open by December 2022.

In total, there were three different possible designs for the $30 million observatory. The winner was the design that represents the image of a whale surfacing its head over the surface of the water. The Rock was inspired by Castle Rock in Western Australia, the Voyage imitates the silhouette and lines of a moored ship against the pier.

Visitors will see marine life through windows that are located where a whale's eyes would be. Along the way through the observatory, you will be guided through art galleries and exhibition spaces. "This is as authentic as it gets, because people are in the tank and the fish are looking in," says Busselton Jetty chairman, Barry House. "By adding underwater dining, underwater sculptures, marine art and other features, this project will enhance Busselton Jetty's 155-year-old experience."
