Bali has just been voted the world's favourite destination in Trip Advisor's Traveller's Choice awards. With its sun-drenched beaches and achingly beautiful scenery, it's not surprise why.

Bali has been crowned the best destination on Earth by Trip Advisor's Traveller's Choice Award. The Indonesian island boasts sprawling white and black beaches, endless swathes of greenery and an infectious ambiance of warmth and spirituality.

The winners were determined by an algorithm that judges the quality and quantity of users' reviews and ratings for hotels, restaurants and attractions in the past 12 months. It also considers traveller booking interest.

Trip Advisor calculated that the average nightly price for a hotel is 166, and Bali is renowned for its reputation in offering high levels of quality in food and accommodation for low prices.

European cities fared well in the list of destinations most popular with travellers, with six making the top ten. London came in at second place, followed by Paris and Rome. Crete was sixth in the list of favourites, followed by Barcelona and Prague, which ranked ninth.

Rajesh Agrawal, Deputy Mayor for Business and Chairman of London & Partners, welcomed the result. "London has the best selection of food, theatre, cultural events, museums and galleries anywhere in the world and we are welcoming more visitors than ever to enjoy the diversity of our great city," he said.

The many faces of Bali mean that it has something on offer for every taste. Ubud is both literally and metaphorically at the heart of the island, sharing lush rice fields and monuments steeped in history with both the east and west sides, whilst keen surfers make a beeline for the unrivalled rollers in Bingin. You will find an array of luxury beachside resorts in Kerobokan, buzzing nightlife in Kuta and Legian, gauntlets of designer shops and boutiques in Seminyak and a family-friendly atmosphere in Sanur.

The news of Bali's award falls just in time for Nyepi, where today the island observes a day of complete tranquility for Hindu New Year. No flights depart or arrive, traffic grinds to a halt and all attractions and shops are shut in the name of silence, self-reflection and meditation.

The best time to go is during the dry season, falling between April and October. However, another of Bali's accolades is that it's a year-round destination - the rain doesn't dampen the backdrop of dramatic volcanoes or its some 10,000 temples.
