There aren't many better office views than that of a pilot and some have taken to Instagram to share snaps of the most impressive places they've flown over, even if they're not legally supposed to...

At 35,000 feet, it's safe to say that pilots have a unique vantage point from which to look down on our beautiful planet. They're able to see extreme weather, amazing sunsets and simply exceptional views.

As a result, many pilots have become big hits on Instagram as they share the views that come with their enviable jobs.

CB anyone?

Santiago Borja is one such pilot. He has amassed a sizeable following on Instagram thanks to his online library of photographs, such as the one above, which captures a powerful storm over the Pacific Ocean.

Jordi Martin Garcia is another popular photo-taking pilot, who posted images of rain clouds rolling over Dutch farmland, as well as photos from his flights over Paris and Tenerife.

Pilots like these often post photographs using the hashtags #pilotlife, #pilotsview and #cockpitview, accumulating thousands of likes on each post.

The new craze could land some piltos in trouble though. There are incredibly strict guidelines governing what airline pilots are permitted to do during a flight, and taking Insta-photos on their smartphones as they approach the landing strip is not one of them!

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), pilots in US airspace should refrain from all non-essential activities during critical phases of flight, normally below 10,000 feet.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) implements similar legislation, though certain Instagram-ing pilots seem to be flouting these rules. The pilots in question do not identify which airlines, if any, they work for.

"La aviacion es lo mas excelso de la especie humana. Es el hombre en busca de la aventura, es el ser que se desprende de la vulgaridad de la tierra, para comulgar con la pureza del cielo y desciende luego a purificar la tierra, despues de haber recibido la comunion de lo infinito". Most pilots, however, respect regulations. Dr Rob Hunter, head of flight safety at the British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA), said "There are of course phases of flight when it is perfectly safe to perform another activity, for example going to the loo or resting. So pilots wishing to take a photograph can do so by choosing their moment carefully."
