US travellers to suffer more restrictions, even when vaccinated

Due to the recent spread of Covid, Europeans are tightening restrictions for American travellers, even when they are vaccinated. Indeed, since August 30, the European Union has recommended to member states to put in place more entry requirements towards the US, even when people are vaccinated - and it has already started.

Since September 3, the Netherlands have set up new rules for "very high-risk areas" such as the US, which state that they have to quarantine for 10 days upon arrival and show a negative test even if they have been vaccinated.

"Following a review under the recommendation on the gradual lifting of the temporary restrictions on nonessential travel into the EU, the Council updated the list of countries, special administrative regions and other entities and territorial authorities for which travel restrictions should be lifted," the Council of the EU said in a statement.

Obviously, this will be an issue for travellers who are planning a short trip, so you should be very careful before going to Europe. Besides, many airlines have also cancelled some of their flights due to these new measures, so make sure to check what is going on with yours.

Because of the recommendations from the European Union, the United States are no longer on the EU's "safe list", although each country can decide how to apply these restrictions within the union.

Italy for instance now requires a negative test for travellers even if they are vaccinated, while Denmark completely banned unvaccinated Americans.

Spain on the other hand only requires a proof of vaccination, a negative COVID-19 test or a proof of recovery from COVID-19. However, it didn't require anything before that, and that still is the case for Belgium.

While other countries have taken no action for now, it is likely to change in the coming months so we would recommend regularly checking the requirements for each country and getting travel insurance in case your trip has to be cancelled.
