Lagos, the old capital of the country, does not have a good reputation. It is known world-wide for its high crime rate, its violence and its overcrowding. The city is divided into three zones: Victoria Island, Ikoyi and East Lagos Island, the heart of the city. The National Museum is famous for its bronze statues from Benin and its ivory sculptures. There are many markets in the city, like in all African cities. The large Balogun market is like a labyrinth, in which you can easily get lost. The beaches are located in the south and are accessible by taxi-boat. The beaches of Palisades, Lekki and Tarkwa are popular destinations.
