Discover The Hajar mountains Oman

Western Hajar, west of Muscat, is to be distinguished from eastern Hajar. The highest peak, Jabal Shams, in western Hajar, towers at 10, 089 ft, whereas in eastern Hajar, the peaks' altitude is not so high. With Muscat as your starting point, Wadi Bani Khalid, a natural basin located in a narrow valley, is reputed for its excursions: you can swim there in warm turquoise blue water, with magnificent mountain desert scenery. As for the Hajar Mountains, they hold small oases, villages and plantations (corn, apricot, almond trees) watered by a canal irrigation system, or falaj. Note that the mountain tracks are only suitable for 4 x 4 driving. From Muscat, through the valley of Sumayl, the road goes across the Hajar and comes out onto the plains of Nizwa to the west, and Sharqiyah to the east.
