Discover La Chapelle Royale de Gdansk Poland

In the shadow of the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, your gaze will probably fall on the Royal Chapel, the only baroque-style religious building in the centre of Gdansk. It is particularly well-lit at night, with its pastel façade topped by a green copper dome creating an atmosphere straight out of a fairy tale.

Although you might just want to admire the perfectly renovated exterior, don't hesitate to push open the heavy door during the day and step inside. Your reward will be the discovery of a charming patio with an original wooden structure, which is indiscernible from the road and especially typical of this region.

Construction on this church began in 1678 under the orders of King Jan III Sobieski to serve as a temporary place of worship for the Catholics of St Mary's parish church, which remained in the hands of Protestants. Indeed, at this time most of the inhabitants of Gdansk had turned to Protestantism and, while doing so, had taken over their places of worship. It is the work of one of the builder's of Gdansk, Barthela Ranisch, who followed the plans of the royal architect Tyman Gameren.

From outside, the chapel is splendid. Unfortunately, the inside could not be restored as nicely due to a lack of finances.
