Estremadura and the Beiras region, to the north and south of Lisbon respectively, alternate vast desert plains populated with bulls, hilly countryside hosting palaces and monasteries and white towns built around fortresses. These regions have remained very rural and are therefore good examples of traditional Portuguese lifestyle.
