Oman forts - Oman

Special feature Oman: Oman forts

Oman forts
Built across the country, from the strait of Ormuz right up to Dhofar, the forts of Oman are a testimony to its military history. Subject to a vast restoration programme, most of them are open to the public. From the heights of their crenellated summits, you discover amazing views over the region (mountains, palm groves, desert valleys). Once residences of the wali (the chief ruling over a plot of land called a Wilayat), the forts have remained the same from the 16th and 17th centuries. You can visit the reception hall, the wali's room and the women's apartment. Also to see: the dungeons where the prisoners were thrown and the secret passages that served as escape routes in case of an invasion of the fort.
