Ski slopes in the desert? - United Arab Emirates

Special feature United Arab Emirates: Ski slopes in the desert?

Ski slopes in the desert?
As if there wasn't enough to see and do in Dubai, with the tallest building in the world, the largest choreographed fountain, the tallest hotel, the city's beaches, aquariums, spice souks, gold souks, textile souks, abras, wining, dining, shopping...you can also SKI! The Mall of the Emirates in Bur Dubai on Sheikh Zayed Road is one of Dubai's largest malls. In the centre of the mall under the neon lights, brace yourself for the sight of ski lifts and an array of skiers and snowboarders gliding down the main slope. The pistes are akin to those of the Alps but instead of stunning views over the snow-capped tops, big blue skies and blazing sunshine, skiers have a view of an aluminium dome and gawping shoppers through the windows. Ski Dubai has great facilities as far as the equipment is concerned and the slopes are not too crowded. Watching from the window, there are also many Emiratis who are fascinated by this phenomenon. They zip themselves up in feather-filled bomber jackets to take their first steps on (artificial) snow. Quite a sight indeed! Opening times: Sun-Wed 10am-11pm. Thur 10am-midnight. Fri 9am-midnight. Sat 9am-11pm. Prices: 100 AED snow park, 180 AED ski slopes, 40 AED for hourly extension, 300 AED day pass. The prices include jacket, trousers, skis/snowboard, boots, socks, helmets. Lessons are also available. For full details, click here
