Discover Nevsky Prospekt Russia

The city's main avenue, the incredible Nevsky Prospekt, stretches 2.8 miles from the Admiralty to the Saint Alexander Nevsky Lavra (monastery). This is where most tourists like to stroll, and also where you can find a multitude of museums, art galleries, theatres, cinemas, shops, palaces and churches. Make sure to visit Stroganov Palace and the Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan, the majestic building inspired by Saint Peter's in Rome. Further down, the Gostiny Dvor with its many arcades is St. Petersburg's equivalent to Moscow's GUM, and is home to dozens of elegant boutiques. The avenue cuts across the charming Ostrovsky Square, which is bordered by the Alexandrinsky Theatre, and runs past Anichkov Palace before crossing the Fontanka via Anichkov Bridge. From here you can see the red façade of Belosselski-Belozerski Palace, the Sheremetiev family's former residence, also known as Fountain House. Southbound, Vladimirsky Prospekt takes you to the Church of Our Lady of Vladimir and through Kouznetchny passage to the Dostoevsky Museum, near Kouznetchny Market. The nearby streets of Marata and Pushkinskaya make up the city's bohemian district. If you continue all the way to the southeastern point of Nevsky Prospekt, you come out onto Alexander Nevsky Lavra, a vast and peaceful monastery with a small cemetery where Dostoevsky is buried.
