Discover Izalco village and volcano Salvador

Izalco, a small village founded in the 10th century, is located East from Sonsonate. It holds a volcano of the same name, also known as "the lighthouse of the Pacific". It owes its nickname to the lava volatiles which, until 1967, could be seen from the ocean. The top of the volcano has since become a beautiful observatory for the surrounding landscapes. From there, you can see, in particular, volcano Santa Ana in the North, the forests to the East and the neighbouring countries' mountains to the West.

Izalco volcano is quite a new mountain; it was only formed in 1770! The 'lighthouse' of the Pacific is now extinct.
