San Salvador is a city you will flee from, particularly on first encounter. Capital city since 1839, it was destroyed in the 19th century by several earthquakes. It was buried under lava flows in 1917, and finally destroyed, again, by an earthquake in 1986. The pollution cloud permanently floating above the heads of the inhabitants brings no light to a sombre picture. There aren't many old colonial buildings. You still ought to stroll around the market and try and soak in the atmosphere.
