The Asir mountain chain, which descends along the Red Sea, interrupts the monotony of the landscape. The altitude becomes higher and higher as you descend towards the Yemen and even reaches 9,840 feet at Jebel Sawdah, next to the town of Abha. The mountainous region of Asir offers a few possibilities for interesting excursions. It is also the only place where the fauna is not just flocks of dromedaries. The area is quite rich in crops of millet, wheat and dates, and you will see gazelles, a few leopards, and baboons. To the east, around al-Hufuf, there is a large area of salt marshes.
