Discover Denis Island Seychelles

Denis Island is a green oasis and wonderful coral island at the heart of the Indian Ocean with a luxury hotel on its western side. The island lies some 60 mi north of Mahé with a transfer time from Mahé Airport of 30 minutes in a small Twin Otter 800 craft. Needless to say, the turf runway makes landing an exhilarating experience! Denis Island is a coral island shaped like a boomerang. It has a circumference of around 2 mi and is one of the greenest islands in the Seychelles, with 445 acres of lush green vegetation, an actual tropical rainforest, a village of 90 inhabitants, a farm, and 25 luxury guest rooms. Surrounded by amazing beaches where you can swim with sea turtles, this really is heaven on earth. The beautiful swimming pool, deluxe rooms, and high quality restaurant make for a decidedly first class version of the Robinson Crusoe experience. Don't be surprised if you bump into the odd giant tortoise just outside your room either! In fact, you'll find 60 or so of them strolling around an enclosure right by the guest rooms. 80 year old Tobby is the oldest on the island. Denis Island has been attracting budding Robinson Crusoes in search of far-flung luxury since 1977. The island actually takes its name from its first tourist, Frenchman Denis de Trobriand, who landed at this idyllic spot in 1773! The local owners, Michael and Kathleen Mason, have been managing the hotel since 1996. The island is not very big and can be explored on foot in an hour and a half, starting with a stroll up the Champs Elysées (not the one in Paris but the road running through the village where the hotel employees live). Next, follow the Avenue des Gens Heureux and admire the little Saint-Denis chapel, with its palm leaf roof, that was inaugurated on 5th December 1978 at the same time as the hotel. The Paradise-Flycatcher, a bird endemic to La Digue, is currently being introduced to the island in a bid to boost its dwindling numbers.
