Can Pastilla

By Amy Adejokun Amy Adejokun Section editor

Our Editorial team's advice

It is fair to say that the Bay of Palma is the most popular place on the island among tourists, as it alone welcomes 8 of the 10 million holidaymakers who visit Majorca each year.
To the east of the city, the bay is a long series of seaside resorts stretching for more than 4 miles from C'an Pastilla to Playa de Palma and El Arenal. Can Pastilla is a popular family resort with a marina. As the airport is located nearby, many airliners and charter planes fly over the area in high season.

To see

The aquarium in Can Pastilla.

To do

This built-up coast, characterised by a very flat terrain, is not particularly charming, but those who love beach activities will still find plenty to do and have the opportunity to try out all kinds of water sports, such as waterskiing, windsurfing and parasailing.
You'll be spoilt for choice with fun things to do: the aquarium in Can Pastilla, Aqualand in El Arenal, Mega Park in Playa de Palma etc.
In the evening, the Es Foguero dinner show, located right next to the airport, is definitely worth seeing! The food is not great but the show is amazing! Flamenco dances, acrobats, contortionists and even an act featuring an Andalusian horse!

pros

  • +  The proximity to Palma and the airport.
  • +  The long, fine sandy beaches with crystal clear water.
  • +  The entertainment and party atmosphere, especially at night.
  • +  The number of things to do (Aquarium, Mega park, Aqualand, etc).

cons

  • -  The overcrowding in summer.
  • -  The built-up coastline with its uninviting architecture.
  • -  The number of low-end hotels.

To think about

Palma de Mallorca Airport is located right next to Can Pastilla. Practical for getting there, but expect noise from the planes! During Oktoberfest (a beer festival), which takes places in October, check out the Mega Park and the 'Bier Strasse' in Playa de Palma for a real taste of all things German! That being said, this German atmosphere remains throughout the year.

To avoid

Those looking for peace and authenticity should avoid the urbanised area of Palma. Its countryside and its villages are worth a visit, as are its mountains and its preserved 'calas' (coves) with their turquoise waters. Buses run regularly between the coastal resorts and Palma, but the best way to discover the island is by car.

To try

The pork and cold cuts are a must.

To bring back

A wide variety of traditional Majorcan crafts. In addition to the famous, world-renowned pearls of Manacor, glass is still made here using traditional techniques, as are ceramics. You can also buy tapestries, embossed leather bags, wrought iron, copper and olive wood objects and herbal liqueurs.
