Canyamel

By Amy Adejokun Amy Adejokun Section editor

Our Editorial team's advice

The village of Canyamel, a relatively small destination with several hotels of various sizes, is a million miles away from the crowds of tourists in the major seaside resorts of Majorca. The surrounding countryside is home to charming fincas (country estates), such as Can Simoneta. Although the cove is admittedly small, it is ideal for swimming. It is in Canyamel that you will find the Caves of Arta, some of the most well-known in Majorca.

To see

There is a very small pedestrian zone with an ice cream parlour, two little supermarkets, a shop and several beach stalls. The sandy beach of Canyamel is delightful. Nearby you will also find the 'Torrente de Canyamel' and the famous Caves of Arta. Built in the 13th century, the 23-metre high Canyamel Tower is also worth seeing.

To do

There is not much to do in the area as it is very small.

pros

  • +  The Caves of Arta.

cons

  • -  The location far from Palma and the airport.

To think about

Due to the relatively isolated location, it is advisable to hire a car to explore the surrounding areas. It will come as no surprise to hear that this place isn't recommended for those who enjoy a lively nightlife, but it is great for those looking for peace and relaxation.

To avoid

Canyamel mainly attracts families with children and retirees from Germany and Italy. Needless to say, those who are looking for somewhere to party had best look elsewhere.

To try

The local cuisine consisting of fish and seafood.

To bring back

Stalactites and stalagmites.
